Spain was visited by a total of 3.3 million inbound tourists in November, representing a 9.3% increase and 280,000 more tourists. The Canary Islands and Catalonia were the autonomous regions to benefit most this month, with increases of 17.9% and 14.6%, respectively.

Spain has set another all-time record after receiving 57.6 million inbound tourists between January and November, which is a year-on-year increase of 5% according to the FRONTUR survey drawn up by the General Sub-directorate of Tourism Information and Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

The Nordic countries, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Russia made the largest contributions to this new growth in inbound tourists over the first 11 months of 2013.
A total of 3.3 million inbound tourists visited Spain in November. This is 9.3% more than in the same month of 2012, in other words, 280,000 more tourists.
All the major emitting markets except Italy posted growth. The net growth posted in the number of tourists from Germany and the Nordic countries is particularly noteworthy. It is also worth noting the year-on-year growth posted by the Russian market, with an increase of almost 55.7%.
The Canary Islands and Catalonia were the autonomous regions to benefit most from the increased number of inbound tourists this month.

Main emitting markets

The United Kingdom was once again the top emitting market of tourists to Spain in November with over 663,000 - 20.1% of the total and growth of 4.8%. The Canary Islands were the main destination for British tourists - with growth of 10.6% - followed by the Region of Valencia - with growth of 8.7%. In the first 11 months of the year, more than 13.7 million British tourists have visited Spain, which represents a 4.6% increase and accounts for 23.8% of all inbound tourists.
The number of visiting German tourists rose by 12.9% in November to a total of 540,232. 54% of German tourists travelled to the Canary Islands and posted growth of 28.1% in this market for the monthly comparison. Noteworthy year-on-year growth was also posted in the number of German tourists who opted for the Region of Valencia and Andalusia. In the year to date, 9.4 million German tourists have visited Spain - 16.3% of the total and growth of 5.2%.
A total of 504,628 French tourists visited Spain - up 6.8% on the same month last year. Catalonia was their main destination and the region to benefit most from the net growth in these tourists. Almost 9 million French tourists travelled to Spain between January and November - posting a 6.4% increase and accounting for 15.6% of all inbound tourists.
Growth of 14% was posted by the Nordic countries in November and 17.4% in the year to date. 69% of these tourists travelled to the Canary Islands - a significant increase. Nonetheless, the increase in Nordic tourists travelling to Andalusia and the Region of Valencia is also worth noting, albeit to a lesser extent. 4.5 million Nordic tourists have visited Spain to date this year - 17.4% more and with a market share of 7.8% of all inbound tourists.
Italy has maintained its downturn, albeit less steep this month with a 2.6% decrease in the number of Italian tourists visiting Spain. The upturn in Italian tourists visiting the Canary Islands was not enough to offset the downturn posted in all other major destination regions. To November, a total of 3 million Italian tourists have visited Spain - 5.3% of the total and 9.2% less than in the same period last year.
From among the remaining markets, it is worth noting the positive performance by Russia and Belgium with increases of 55.7% and 17.9%, respectively, and a total number of tourists this year to date of 1.5 million from Russia and over 1.7 million from Belgium.

Main destination autonomous regions

With almost 1.1 million inbound tourists, the highest growth in November was posted by the Canary Islands - 17.9% - and was the chosen destination for 32.5% of inbound tourists visiting Spain this month. Both the region's main emitting markets of the United Kingdom, Germany and the Nordic countries, and such others as Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Russia and Switzerland posted excellent results with double-digit year-on-year growth. To November 2013, 9.5 million inbound tourists travelled to the Canary Islands - up 4% - and accounting for 16.7% of the total number visiting Spain.
836,654 inbound tourists visited Catalonia in November - up 14.6% on the same month last year. French tourists were the most numerous and, together with tourists from Asia and Russia, made the largest contribution to net growth in the region. In the first 11 months of the year, growth in this region stands at 7.4% and accounts for 25.8% of the Spanish total with over 14.8 million inbound tourists.
With an increase of 5.1% to 387,456 tourists, Andalusia accounted for 11.7% of inbound tourists visiting Spain in November. The United Kingdom was the region's main emitting market, while Germany and Belgium made the largest contribution to the net increase in inbound tourists. The Russian market posted a high rate of year-on-year growth. To November, 7.5 million tourists have visited Andalusia - with an increase of 4.1% and accounting for 13.1% of the total.
Visited by 340,703 inbound tourists, the Region of Madrid posted a decline of 10.6% in November due to fewer tourists visiting from Italy, France, the United States, Germany and Portugal. The exception can be found in the number of inbound tourists coming from Latin America, which posted an increase of 17.2%. To November 2013, the number of inbound tourists visiting Madrid has fallen by 6.9% to a total of 3.9 million.
The Region of Valencia recorded an increase of 9% in the month with a total of 299,779 inbound tourists. The British market was responsible for 38% of this number and also contributed the largest number of non-residents to recorded net growth. The German, Nordic and Belgian markets also posted double-digit year-on-year growth. 5.7 million inbound tourists have visited this region to date this year, which is an increase of 11.2%.
The Balearic Islands were visited by 113,483 inbound tourists in the month - reflecting a decrease of 8.7% that is basically due to a downturn in the German market. 11 million inbound tourists visited this region over the year to date - an increase of 7.2% and accounting for 19.2% of the national total.
An 8% increase was posted by the remaining regions as a whole, with France being the main emitting market and also posting the highest growth.

Form of travel, accommodation and type of holiday

Growth was recorded in both the number of arrivals by road and by air in November - 15.8% and 8.9%, respectively. To date this year, access by air has grown by 5.1% while access by road has grown by 6.9%.
