Spain sees record tourist numbers for first half of year



According to the FRONTUR Survey - Inbound Tourism Survey - drafted by the General Sub-directorate of Tourism Information and Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, Spain posted a new record for the first half of this year with a total of 28 million inbound tourists, an increase of 7.3% on the same period of 2013.
​Between January and June, the United Kingdom was the top emitting market once again with 6,535,251 tourists (up 5.8%); followed by Germany with 4,658,700 tourists (up 8.8%) and France with 4,239,804 tourists (up 10.3%). In this period, Catalonia was the top destination autonomous region with 7.1 million inbound tourists.
 
In June, 6.6 million inbound tourists visited Spain, an increase of 4.5% and also a new June record since FRONTUR records began.
The United Kingdom was the top emitting market in the month with 1,743,513 tourists (up 3% on 2013); followed by Germany with 1,133,931 tourists (posting significant growth among the top emitting markets of 10.8% - the second-highest in the month) and France with 814,113 tourists (up 7%).

Main emitting markets

1,743,513 inbound tourists visited Spain from the United Kingdom in June, accounting for 26.5% of the total and maintaining the country's leading position. The number of British tourists rose by 33.5% in the Region of Madrid and by 21.2% in Catalonia. In the first half of the year, 6,535,251 inbound tourists came from this market, accounting for 23.3% of the total with an increase of 5.8%.

1,133,931 inbound tourists came from Germany in the month, accounting for 17.2% of the total and with the highest increase (10.8%) among the top emitting markets.  This growth was felt in all autonomous regions, especially the Balearic Islands. Between January and June, 4,658,700 German tourists visited Spain. In other words, 16.6% of the total, with an increase of 8.8%.

With 814,113 inbound tourists, France accounted for 12.4% of the total with an increase of 7% in June, which was particularly felt in Catalonia, the Region of Valencia and the Canary Islands. In the first half of the year, 4,239,804 French tourists visited Spain; 15.1% of the total, with an increase of 10.3%.

429,629 inbound tourists came from the Nordic markets, with a slight decrease of 1.3% on June 2013 and accounting for 6.5% of the total. More inbound tourists from these markets visited the Region of Madrid, Andalusia and the Region of Valencia. 2,427,499 Nordic tourists visited Spain in the first half of the year, with an increase of 6.7% and accounting for 8.7% of the total.

At 11% Italy posted the highest growth in June, thereby consolidating previous signs of recovery. The 352,250 Italian tourists accounted for 5.4% of the total. The Region of Madrid and the Balearic Islands were their main destinations. Between January and June, 1,523,078 Italian tourists came to Spain; and increase of 13.9% - one of the highest growth figures for the first half of the year.

Belgium maintained its significant growth into June, with 10.2% and 187,039 inbound tourists accounting for 2.8% of the total. In the first half of the year, this market posted the highest year-on-year growth, standing at 21%.

Main destination autonomous regions

The Balearic Islands were the top destination in June, with 1,740,945 inbound tourists, 2.1% growth and 26.4% of the total. Germany and Italy were the main emitting markets. Between January and June, 4,220,001 inbound tourists visited the Balearic Islands - a decrease of 0.6% on the previous year. This equates to 15.1% of the total.

1,677,679 inbound tourists visited Catalonia in June, an increase of 2.4%. These tourists mainly came from the United Kingdom and France. In the first half of the year, Catalonia accounted for 25.4% of the total and the highest absolute figure with 7,128,521 inbound tourists - an increase of 6.7%.
Andalusia posted growth of 5.5% and accounted for 13% of the total with 856,167 inbound tourists in June, mainly Germans and Asians. In the first half of the year, this region posted growth of 9%, 3,738,136 inbound tourists and 13.3% of the total.

The Canary Islands received 769,586 tourists, representing 11.7% of the monthly total, with an increase of 8.1%. The region's top emitting markets were the United Kingdom and Germany. Between January and June, the Canary Islands were the destination for 5,624,062 inbound tourists, with an increase of 12.4% - the highest in the period - and accounting for 20.1% of the total.

626,035 inbound tourists visited the Region of Valencia in June, mainly from France, the Nordic markets and Belgium, with an increase of 0.9% and accounting for 9.5% of the monthly total. The Region of Valencia was visited by 2,653,022 inbound tourists in the first half of the year, an increase of 5.6%, representing 9.5% of the total.

The Region of Madrid was visited by 417,110 inbound tourists, an increase of 14.5% and representing 6.3% of the June total. The United States and Italy were the main emitting markets. Between January and June, 2,300,727 inbound tourists visited the Region of Madrid, an increase of 8%.

Form of travel, accommodation and type of holiday

Air travel was the chosen form of travel for 83.7% of the total - 5,507,869 tourists in June - compared with 14.9% or 979,814 inbound tourists who arrived by road. Growth in air traffic stood at 3.4%, while the growth in road traffic stood at 10.8%. Air travel was also the most popular form of travel in the first half of the year, with 23,168,540 inbound tourists arriving by air - an increase of 7.3%.

Hotel accommodation accounted for 66.5% of the total, with 4,380,375 inbound tourists in June, with growth of 3.4%. 33.5% of inbound tourists chose non-hotel accommodation - in other words, 2,202,566 tourists - while 16.6% stayed in private property or property owned by relatives, 12.6% in rented property and 4.3% at other accommodation establishments.

The number of inbound tourists travelling on a package holiday rose by 10.6% in June - to 2,167,155 - accounting for 32.9% of the total compared with 67.1% of inbound tourists choosing to travel independently, which rose by 1.8% to 4,415,786. In the first half of 2014, inbound tourists travelling independently accounted for 68.3% of the total - an increase of 3.6% - while those who travelled on a package holiday accounted for 31.7% of the total - an increase of 16.3%.
