Recorded unemployment rose by 8,070 in August on the previous month and the total number of unemployed registered with the Public Employment Services now stands at 4,427,930. In the last 10 years, recorded unemployment has increased by an average of 49,025 in August.
In seasonally-adjusted terms, recorded unemployment fell by 11,091. Except for last year, this is the sharpest drop in August since 2002.
Recorded unemployment has fallen by 270,853 over the last 12 months, the largest reduction in August since current records began. The year-on-year rate stands at -5.76%.
This rate has fallen by more than 18 points since the high of 12.5% recorded in May 2012. In turn, the accumulated reduction in recorded unemployment in the first eight months of the year - a total of 273,408 people - is the highest since 1998.
Recorded unemployment among the under-25s has fallen by 20,020 over the last 12 months, which is a year-on-year decrease of 4.9%.
By economic sector, recorded unemployment posted the following variations when compared with July: a decrease of 6,894 in agriculture (-3.12%); an increase of 5,780 in industry (1.27%); an increase of 162 in construction (0.03%); and an increase of 15,161 in services (0.54%). Finally, the number of first-time job-seekers fell by 6,139 (-1.6%).
A total of 72,955 permanent employment contracts were recorded in August 2014, accounting for 6.43% of all employment contracts and representing an increase of 10,501 (16.81%) on the same month last year. An accumulated total of 845,491 employment contracts were recorded to August 2014, which is an increase of 114,884 (15.72%) on the same period of 2013.
The State Secretary for Employment wished to highlighted that, "since March, we have seen six consecutive months in which the number of permanent employment contracts has risen by more than 15%. This has not happened since 2006". Engracia Hidalgo also stressed that "permanent full-time employment is even growing faster than the average, at 19.23% year-on-year".
The number of training and apprenticeship contracts continues to post highly positive results. A total of 7,882 such contracts were signed in August, which represents an increase of 50% in the last 12 months. In addition, 3,105 work experience contracts were signed this month, representing an accumulated increase of 35% in the last year.
"These figures maintain the medium-term upward trend in employment that the Labour Force Survey, National Insurance contribution figures and recorded unemployment figures have been reflecting in the last year", she said.
The State Secretary wished to particularly highlight the positive performance posted by permanent employment by stating that "these dynamic hiring results are what we need for the labour market improvement to be sustained and foster the switch from unemployment to job creation, which is the priority for the Government of Spain".
She concluded by stating that, "as we have always said, our main objective is for economic growth to translate into stable jobs and offer opportunities to all those people who are actively seeking employment".

Recorded unemployment fell in eight autonomous regions, led by Galicia (-3,340), Castile Leon (-2,699) and the Canary Islands (-1,754). The number of new employment contracts recorded in August amounted to 1,135,109. This represents an increase of 91,943 (8.81%) on the same month of 2013. There were a total of 2,524,715 unemployment benefit recipients in July 2014, 2.24% more than the previous month. The amount of benefits paid out by the system amounted to 1.99 billion euros, 2.27% more than the previous month.Assessment
