Average number of foreign citizens registered with Spanish Social Security system stands at 1,645,874 in September


The average number of foreign workers registered with the Social Security system stands at 1,645,874 in September, up 0.14% on the previous month (2,229 more workers).

The number of foreign workers contributing to the Social Security system has risen by 4.02% year-on-year, with 63,539 more workers than in 2014. This is the largest increase in foreign workers in a month of September since 2008.


The highest figures for foreign workers contributing to the Social Security system correspond to Romania (291,601), Morocco (190,821), China (93,696), Italy (77,241) and Ecuador (70,804). These countries are followed by Bolivia (56,849), Colombia (54,690), the United Kingdom (55,759) and Bulgaria (52,751).

When compared with the previous month, the number of foreign contributors in September rose in all autonomous regions except Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, the Region of Valencia, the Region of Murcia and Melilla. When compared with last year, the number of foreign workers increased in all autonomous regions, except Castile La Mancha.

The figures posted for September show that 964,657 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, while the remaining 681,217 are from EU countries.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,380,188 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (186,480) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (201,826). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (260,679), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,754) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (253).

Of the total foreign citizens in the system in August, 897,235 are men and 748,639 are women.
