The number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security
system stood at 1,632,903 in July. This figure represents a decrease of 8,920 or
0.54%. In year-on-year terms, the number of foreign citizens registered with the
system continues to fall.
The year-on-year decrease in the number of foreign contributors stands at
-7.48%. This compares with a rate of -3.56% for the Spanish Social Security
system as a whole. These two indicators show a continuation of the trend already
seen in previous months, insofar as that job losses continue to have more impact
on foreign workers than those of Spanish nationality.
Cantabria and the Balearic Islands are the autonomous regions posting the
highest month-on-month increases (3.96% and 3.43%, respectively), followed by
Catalonia (1.97%), Aragon (1.58%), Asturias (1.27%), Castile-Leon (1.25%), the
Canary Islands (0.96%) and the Region of Valencia (0.78%). Galicia (0.63%) and
Castile-La Mancha (0.59%) also posted positive results.
The figures recorded for July show that 1,013,573 of the total 1,632,903
foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system came from
countries outside of the European Union. The remaining 619,329 are from EU
countries.
The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime:
1,003,077, a figure that does not include the Special System for Agricultural
Workers (173,385) or the Special System for Domestic Workers (226,764). This is
followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (224,541), the Special
Regime for Seamen (4,823) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (312).
Catalonia is the autonomous region with the largest average number of foreign
citizens registered with the system; 382,444 (23.42%). This is followed by the
Region of Madrid, with 344,663 (21.11%); Andalusia, with 177,302 (10.86%); and
the Region of Valencia, with 165,390 (10.13%).
Of the total 1,632,903 foreign citizens in the system, 858,279 are men and
774,623 are women.
