The
number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system
stood at 1,607,609 in August. This figure represents a decrease of 25,294 or
1.55%. In year-on-year terms, the number of foreign citizens registered with
the system continues to fall.
The year-on-year decrease in the number of
foreign contributors stands at 8.05%, which compares with a rate of 3.36% for
the Spanish Social Security system as a whole. These two indicators show a
continuation of the trend already seen in previous months, insofar as that job
losses continue to have more impact on foreign workers than those of Spanish
nationality.
Cantabria and the Canary Islands are the
autonomous regions posting the highest month-on-month increases (1.42% and
0.47%, respectively), followed by Asturias (0.38%) and Galicia (0.26%). The
remaining autonomous regions show a downturn in the number of foreign citizens
registered with the system, data that coincide with the end of the summer
season.
The figures recorded for August show that
1,002,107 of the total 1,607,609 foreign citizens registered with the Spanish
Social Security system came from countries outside of the European Union. The
remaining 605,501 are from EU countries.
The majority of foreign citizens are registered
under the General Regime: 991,924, a figure that does not include the Special
System for Agricultural Workers (163,043) or the Special System for Domestic
Workers (224,423). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed
Workers (223,138), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,765) and the Special Regime
for Coal Workers (316).
Catalonia is the autonomous region with the
largest average number of foreign citizens registered with the system; 380,989
(23.7%). This is followed by the Region of Madrid, with 338,873 (21.08%);
Andalusia, with 172,823 (10.75%); and the Region of Valencia, with 162,718
(10.12%).
Of the total 1,607,609 foreign citizens in the
system, 842,360 are men and 765,248 are women.
