FAMILY BENEFITS (II): ECONOMIC BENEFIT FOR MULTIPLE BIRTHS OR ADOPTION






Family benefits are provided to cover the financial needs or extra expenses of certain people, caused by family responsibilities and the birth or adoption of children in certain cases.

 Economic benefit for multiple births or adoption

It is a single payment benefit, which aims to partially compensate for the increased costs for families that arise from the simultaneous birth or adoption of two or more children. The children born or adopted in a multiple birth or multiple adoption, as long as the number of children born or adopted is greater than or equal to two (if any of them have been affected by a degree of disability greater than or equal to 33%, the amount calculated will be double) and the birth or the formalisation of the adoption took place in Spain. 

The recipients of this economic benefits are:

  • The parents or adoptive parents who fulfill the requirements.
  • If the parents or adoptive parents live together, either one can be the beneficiary by mutual agreement; if there is no agreement, it will be the mother. If the parents are not living together , the beneficiary will be the one who has the charge and custody of the child.
  • If children become orphans of both parents or adoptive parents,  or are abandoned, the beneficiary will be the person who has legal custody of them


The recipients would have to fulfill the following two requirements:
-Legally residing in Spain.
-Neither the father nor the mother may be entitled to benefits of the same type under any other social protection scheme.
Depending on whether the number of children born or adopted is 2, 3, or 4 or over, the amount of the economic benefit will be the product of multiplying the monthly amount of the SMI (legal minimum salary) by 4, 8 or 12. The benefit will be paid as a single payment.


The benefit consists of a lump-sum payment, the amount of which will be:

The right to the acknowledgement of the benefit expires 5 years after the day following the multiple birth or adoption.
