The number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security System stood at 1,582,335 in September. In overall terms, this figure remains the same as for August, with a minor decline of 488 people, or 0.03%.
The year-on-year rate for the number of contributors to the system overall fell by 0.87%. The highest figures for foreign workers correspond to Romania, Morocco, China and Ecuador, with 274,753, 181,174, 91,002 and 75,300 respectively.
Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura, La Rioja and Castile Leon are the autonomous regions showing the highest month-on-month increases (21.13%, 10.17%, 2.8% and 2.77% respectively. In contrast, Aragon (-5.73%), Cantabria (-4.22%), the Balearic Islands (-3.9%) and Asturias (-3.32%) show the largest decreases.
The figures recorded for September show that 940,883 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, with the remaining 641,452 from EU countries.
The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,337,507, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (180,764) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (209,307). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (240,018), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,544) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (266).
Catalonia is the autonomous region with the highest average number of foreign citizens registered with the system; 368,641 (23.3%). This is followed by the Region of Madrid, with 324,879 (20.53%); Andalusia, with 178,247 (11.26%); and the Region of Valencia, with 163,213 (10.31%).
Of the total 1,582,335 foreign citizens in the system, 847,664 are men and 734,671 are women.
