The number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system stood at 1,641,822 in June. This figure represents a decline of 9,568 or 0.58%. In year-on-year terms, the number of foreign citizens registered with the system continues to fall.
The year-on-year decline in the number of foreign contributors stands at -6.74%, compared with a rate of -3.72% for the Spanish Social Security system as a whole. These two indicators show a continuation of the trend already seen in previous months, insofar as that job losses continue to have more impact on foreign workers than those of Spanish nationality.
The Balearic Islands and Aragon are the autonomous regions posting the highest month-on-month increases (9.87% and 7.48%, respectively), while Castile-La Mancha (3.64%), Catalonia (2.24%), Extremadura (1.58%), Castile-Leon (1.37%), the Basque Country (0.75%) and Madrid (0.13%) were also positive.
The figures recorded for June show that 1,018,834 of the total 1,641,822 foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system came from countries outside of the European Union. The remaining 622,988 are from EU countries.
The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 991,257, a figure that does not include the Special System for Agricultural Workers (192,961) or the Special System for Domestic Workers (228,945). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (223,639), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,721) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (300).
Catalonia is the autonomous region with the largest average number of foreign citizens registered with the system; 375,040 (22.84%). This is followed by the Region of Madrid, with 347,047 (21.14%); Andalusia, with 218,651 (13.24%); and the Region of Valencia, with 164,114 (10%).
Of the total 1,641,822 foreign citizens in the system, 863,800 are men and 778,022 are women.
