Average number of foreign citizens registered with Spanish Social Security system rises by 55,334 in May, the largest rise since 2005


The number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system stood at 1,663,217 in May, an increase of 3.44% - or 55,334 National Insurance contributors - on April. The increase in contributor numbers to the system was the largest for the month of May since 2005 (the year in which the status of immigrants was regularised).

When compared with 2014, the number of foreign workers has increased by 3.42% - equivalent to 54,996 more NI contributors. The rate has returned to positive figures for the first time in six years.

The highest figures for foreign workers contributing to the system correspond to Romania (300,055), Morocco (210,017), China (92,905) and Italy (72,661). These countries are followed by Ecuador (72,166), the United Kingdom (59,102), Bolivia (58,013) and Colombia (53,443).

When compared with the previous month, the number of foreign NI contributors in May rose in all autonomous regions except Andalusia (-0.21%) and the Canary Islands (-1.05%). Compared with last year, the number of workers increased in all autonomous regions except Galicia (-0.66%).

The figures posted for May show that 972,017 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, while the remaining 691,200 are from EU countries.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,403,860 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (224,572) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (207,139). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (254,717), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,371) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (268).

Most economic sectors saw an increase in foreign workers, both in monthly and annual terms.

Of the total foreign citizens in the system in May, 901,882 are men and 761,335 are women.
