Spain closes first four-month period of 2015 with new record spending by inbound tourists at 15.92 billion euros, up 7.2%


According to the Tourist Expenditure Survey (EGATUR) drafted by the General Sub-directorate of Tourism Information and Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, spending by those inbound tourists who travelled to Spain in the first four months of the year hit a new record of 15.92 billion euros. This represents growth of 7.2% on the corresponding period in 2014.

The United Kingdom maintained its position as the top emitting market in terms of spending for the first four-month period of the year, at 2.89 billion euros, an increase of 11.9%. Significant growth was also posted by tourists from France and Italy, at 17.7% and 28.6%, respectively.

To April, Catalonia, the Region of Madrid and the Balearic Islands performed particularly well with accelerated rates of growth in terms of tourist spending and year-on-year increases of 10% or more in this period.

In April, total expenditure by inbound tourists travelling to Spain amounted to 5.16 billion euros, an increase of 7.6% and also the best figure since records began.
Emitting markets

UK tourists spent 2.89 billion euros between January and April, up 11.9% and accounting for 18.1% of the total. In April, this market spent 1 billion euros on their travels to Spain, up 6.7%, accounting for 19.5% of the total. This result stems from both an increase in average spending per person and per day.

German tourists spent 2.48 billion euros in the four-month period, down 2.3%, accounting for 15.6% of the total. Last month, German tourists spent 789 million euros, a slight decrease of 0.8%. This was due to a downturn in the number of inbound tourists from this market, although their average spending figures rose slightly.

Tourists from the Nordic markets spent 1.79 billion euros to April, down 10.6% and accounting for 11.2% of the total. In the month, this market spent 443 million euros, down 8.4%. This was due to fewer Nordic tourists, although their average spending figures per day and per person increased.

French tourists spent 1.68 billion euros between January and April, up 17.7% and accounting for 10.5% of the total. In April, the French market posted the highest monthly growth, up 32.3% on last year with 639 million euros, accounting for 12.4% of the total, enabling France to climb to third place overall.

Italy posted the highest growth in the four-month period, at 28.6% more tourist spending than in the same period of 2014. The total of 762 million euros accounts for 4.8% of the total. In April, Italy was the fifth market in terms of inbound tourist spending, with 259 million euros, up 14.6%. Both the number of Italian tourists and their average spending figures increased.

The remaining markets accounted for 39.3% of inbound tourist spending and posted growth of 8.5%. Noteworthy growth was posted by the Asian and Latin American markets.
Main destination autonomous regions

The Canary Islands maintained its leading position in terms of inbound tourist spending in the first four months of the year at 4.61 billion euros, albeit with a slight decrease of 1%. Even so, the region accounted for 29% of total spending by inbound tourists in Spain. In April, 1.05 billion euros were spent by inbound tourists in the Canary Islands, an increase of 0.8% on last year with an increase of 6.7% in the average spend per tourist. Significant contributions were made by the United Kingdom and Germany.

A total of 3.5 billion euros were spent in Catalonia, an increase of 10.6% and accounting for 22% of the total. 1.21 billion euros were spent in this region in April, up 7%, accounting for 23.5% of the monthly total. The largest contributions were made by the Asian countries, France and the United States.

A total of 2.47 billion euros were spent in Andalusia, up 7.8%, accounting for 15.5% of the total in the four-month period. The monthly results posted by the region remained unchanged from last year at 925 million euros, accounting for 17.9% of the total. Spending by French and UK tourists in the region increased, while spending by tourists from Germany and the Nordic countries decreased.

The Region of Madrid posted the highest growth in the period, at 18.8%, with 1.82 billion euros to April, accounting for 11.4% of the total. The region also posted the largest increase in absolute terms, up 34.7% or 153 million euros. This stems from an increase in the number of tourists and an increase in the average spend per person. A significant contribution was made by Latin America.

A total of 1.27 billion euros were spent in the Region of Valencia, up 8.1%, accounting for 8% of the total for the four-month period. 439 million euros were spent in this region in April, up 12.7%, accounting for 8.5% of the total.

To April, a total of 1.03 billion euros were spent by tourists visiting the Balearic Islands, up 10% and accounting for 6.4% of the total for the period. In the month, the region posted growth of 2.2% to 543 million euros, accounting for 10.5% of the monthly total.
Type of accommodation, type of holiday and reason for travel

Spending on hotel accommodation amounted to 10.23 billion euros, up 5.7%, accounting for 64.2% of the total for the four-month period. Non-hotel accommodation spending stood at 5.69 billion euros, an increase of 9.8%. Hotel accommodation also accounted for the majority of tourist spending in the monthly figures at 3.28 billion euros, an increase of 3.9%. Non-hotel accommodation represented 1.88 billion euros, an increase of 14.8%.

Independent travel in the first four months of 2015 accounted for 67.1% of total tourist spending, i.e. 10.68 billion euros, an increase of 9.5%. Those tourists travelling on a package holiday to Spain spent a total of 5.24 billion euros, an increase of 2.8%. In April, a total of 3.58 billion euros were spent by tourists travelling independently, an increase of 10.6%, while those travelling on a package holiday spent 1.58 billion euros, an increase of 1.3%.
