Inbound tourist spending in Spain sets new record of 21.81 billion euros between January and May, up 8.4%


In May, total spending by inbound tourists rose by 11.8% to 5.89 billion euros. This is a new record for May and the largest year-on-year increase ever recorded in May.

​According to the Tourist Expenditure Survey (Spanish acronym: EGATUR) drafted by the General Sub-directorate of Tourism Information and Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, total spending by inbound tourists travelling to Spain between January and May was the highest since records began, standing at 21.81 billion euros. This represents growth of 8.4% on the first five months of 2014.

The United Kingdom, with a 10.8% spending increase to 4.22 billion euros and France, with a 16.5% increase to 2.22 billion euros, were the two emitting markets posting the highest spending increases to May.

The Canary Islands were the top destination for tourist spending in the period, with 5.42 billion euros and growth of 1.3%. This region was followed by Catalonia, with 4.8 billion euros and growth of 8.2%, and Andalusia, with 3.44 billion euros and growth of 10.3%. The largest year-on-year growth in the first five months of the year was posted by the Region of Madrid, with an increase of 14.8% to 2.51 billion euros.

In May, total spending by inbound tourists travelling to Spain rose by 11.8% to 5.89 billion euros. This is a new record for May and the largest year-on-year increase ever recorded in May.
Emitting markets

Once again, the United Kingdom remains the top emitting market for tourism to Spain - both between January and May with spending of 4.22 billion euros accounting for 19.3% of the total - and in the month of May with spending of 1.33 billion euros accounting for 22.6% of the total, an increase of 8.6%. This increase was mainly due to a 9.6% increase in the average spend per tourist, which was especially felt in the Canary Islands.

German tourists spent a total of 3.43 billion euros in the first five months of the year, accounting for 15.7% of the total with growth of 1.6%. In May, 948 million euros were spent by German tourists on their travels to Spain, up 13.4% and accounting for 16.1% of the total. Increases in the number of tourists (up 10%), the average spend per tourist (up 3%) and the average spend per day (up 3.1%) were the reasons behind these figures.

French tourists spent a total of 2.22 billion euros, an increase of 16.5% (the largest of all the main emitting markets) and accounting for 10.2% of the total in the first five months of the year; thus putting this market in third position. In May, French tourists spent 549 million euros, up 12.9% and accounting for 9.3% of the total. Catalonia was the region where these increases were most strongly felt.

Tourists from the Nordic markets spent 2.2 billion euros between January and May, a decrease of 5.9% and accounting for 10.1% of the total. In May, these tourists spent 415 million euros; a significant increase of 21.6% (the largest of the main emitting markets) that broke from the downward trend recorded in recent months. This result was supported by an increase in the average spend per tourist of 16.8% and in the average spend per day of 20.6%.


The United States, in fifth position with 1.09 billion euros spent between January and May, posted strong growth of 25.7% and accounted for 5% of the total. In May, the growth posted by this market was even greater, at 35.8%, with US tourists spending 390 million euros, accounting for 6.6% of the total. The reasons for this can be found in both an increase in the number of tourists (up 18.3%) and the average spend per tourist (up 14.8%).
Main destination autonomous regions

The highest inbound tourist spending figure between January and May was recorded by the Canary Islands, at 5.42 billion euros, up 1.3% and accounting for 24.8% of the total. In May, with 806 million euros, the spending increase stood at 16.7%, accounting for 13.7% of the total. The reasons were an increase in both the number of tourists and their average spending figures, especially among British tourists.

A total of 4.8 billion euros was spent in Catalonia, up 8.2%, accounting for 22% of the total between January and May. In May, this region posted the highest spending figure, at 1.29 billion euros, an increase of 2.2% and accounting for 22% of the total. France and the United States were the two markets making the largest contribution to these figures.

Inbound tourists spent 3.44 billion euros in Andalusia, an increase of 10.3% in the five-month period and accounting for 15.8% of the total. In May, a total of 975 million euros were spent in this region, an increase of 16.9%, which was the largest regional increase in the month and accounted for 16.6% of the total.

2.51 billion euros were spent in the Region of Madrid, an increase of 14.8% between January and May (the largest in the period) and accounting for 11.5% of the total. In May, 687 million euros were spent by tourists in Madrid, up 5.6% and accounting for 11.7% of the total. Germany, the Asian markets and Italy performed particularly well.

With 2.17 billion euros in the five-month period, the Balearic Islands accounted for 10% of the total with an increase of 12.7%. In May, with 1.14 billion euros spent, this region rose to second place with an increase of 15.3% and accounting for 19.4% of the total. This result was influenced by the average spend per trip and the number of tourists, especially Germans.

1.76 billion euros were spent in the Region of Valencia, up 8.6% in the first five months of 2015, accounting for 8.1% of the total. In May, 491 million euros were spent in this region, an increase of 9.7% and accounting for 8.3% of the total.
Type of accommodation, type of holiday and reason for travel

Those tourists who opted for hotel accommodation spent 14.15 billion euros between January and May, up 5.5%; in other words, hotel accommodation accounted for 64.9% of the total. In May, this type of accommodation also accounted for the majority, at 66.5%, when 3.92 billion euros were spent, up 5%.

Spending on trips by tourists choosing to travel independently rose by 11.5% between January and May to 14.61 billion euros, compared with 7.2 billion euros by those choosing to travel on a package holiday. In May, spending on independent travel rose by 17.5% to 3.92 billion euros, while spending on package holidays rose by 2.1%.
